The sand dunes of Greenhills Beach were mined, and this house was built on remediated land. The altered geology gave opportunity for embedment of spaces. And so, above ground, parts of the house could be well separated by a series of walled gardens. Cool air rises through the building and the gardens further mollify climatic extremes. With generous setbacks on all boundaries, the site is unified by native landscape.

A palette of rammed earth and durable pozzolanic concrete was used in ground, with the above ground structure largely in recycled timber.

60kW of PV panels, a geothermal system, and 80,000 l of rainwater storage are utilized. The clients supported an exemplary site culture, respect for materials, and an innovative, durable build to the highest quality.
