THE SHED

Shoalhaven NSW | Budawang (Yuin)
2023

The Shed is an off grid residence in an open valley on the south coast of NSW.

Other than corrugated cladding, it is built entirely from recycled hardwood. All timbers were salvaged from an early 20th century waterfront building. Their large size was rare with posts being 370 x 370mm tallow wood stamped “Casino” and so from original old growth forestry in northern NSW.

The unique and historic quality of these timbers caused us to “reverse engineer” the design to preserve all the section sizes within the new building. The original dark weathered cladding and decking was also used for all interior linings and joinery.

The building has a unique mood of calmness and seclusion as a result.

Workmanship on the project was exemplary to allow weathered re-purposed timbers operate to fine tolerances as part of door and joinery assembles.
